Why President Clinton's apology falls on deaf ears. [8-10-2000]

William Jefferson Clinton disgraced his office, and brought dishonor to the White House. Instead of resigning, he decided "We just have to win, then," and proceeded to lie to the American people. Clinton decided that clinging to the reigns of power was more important than protecting the dignity of the office of President of the United States. This decision, sadly, means that America still has a President in office, that, by his own admission, has committed adultry, and lied to the American people.

Bill Clinton had a chance to redeem himself. By resigning from office, issuing a profound and heartfelt apology, and then removing himself from the public eye for a time, he might well have had a chance to restore his image, not unlike the way that Richard Nixon did, when he also disgraced his office and betrayed the American trust.

Because Clinton resisted any consequences for his actions, his rehabilitation as a public figure is nearly impossible. There will always be a few who applaud him, and a few even applaud his taudry conduct, but the majority of Americans will not find him credible in future 'apologies' because of his selfish concern for himself, rather than putting America first.
